I cannot think of a more complete description?  I'd be happy to provide
whatever info is needed to help to solve the problem.

I tried every GUI-based method to look at files and folders, look at
network info, etc.  In no case did I find anything that recognized the
presence of a connection other than "Activated" at both ends for eth0,
and the lights on the autoswitch/hub.

Tell me specifically what else you need to know and as I have so far I
will provide it -- I really don't have have any idea where else to look.
