You can tell Word to export HTML, but it's pretty funky HTML. Better to go direct.

In general I'm in favor of having multiple paths to produce internet-drafts, so I certainly wouldn't object to MS Word -> XML2RFC as an alternative to HTML->XML2RFC.   But even the funky HTML produced by MS Word, I expect, still contains all of the text present in the input, a bit of formatting, and also enough information to distinguish a new paragraph from a newline, and pre-formatted text from wrapped text.  And I would consider it necessary to strip out most of the HTML formatting down to XML2RFC equivalent no matter what the source.
