That does change the meaning. The original just reported that there was an
error while building it, the rewritten says building it failed. I'm not sure
there is actually any distinction here, but I'm trying to stick close to the
original meaning of the message (even if it might be wrong).

You are right, the translation can be misunderstood.
Shortening to "Det är inte möjligt att hämta från grupp och samtidigt ange
ref.specifikationer" to fit in under 80 characters (now 79...).
Jag lyfte medvetet bort idiotförklaringen av användaren.
Of course the user is an idiot, I mean, the program itself is a git, so why
shouldn't the user be one too? :-)

That's a word that means something else... I don't really have any good
idea on how to translate "grep" when used as a verb...

I read this as an understood "[The program was] unable to ...", and use this
form for all translation of incomplete sentences starting with "unable".

"Trycka iväg" sounds horrible, IMHO. I used "Sänd" in the git-gui
translation of "Push". As long as git doesn't grow a "git send"
command, I think that should be OK.
Översättningarna i Git-gui är prejudicerande för denna översättning. Sen
kanske de inte är 100%-aga heller, men i så fall bör både C Git och Git
Gui ändras. Sen finns kanske ytterligare översättningar av andra
Git-verktyg. Personligen föredrar jag nog Skicka. Absolut inte trycka.
Since I have done all the three translations (git-gui, gitk, git) I can
easily fix it in all once everyone agrees. Until then I stick with what I
have. :-)
Myndigheternas Skrivregler. Svenska Akademien använder "t.ex." på webben i
alla fall (utan blank).

While I do agree, I have never heard anyone use "etikett" for a tag in the
computer science sense (neither a HTML tag nor a VCS tag). While "tagg" is
obviously horrible, I do use it in the translations simply because that is
what everyone else is using.
