I am so sorry, I do not even remember where I found my original configuration; however, I did test changing the crypt_root variable before posting, and it did change where cryptsetup looked for my device, without having to remake anything.
I thought, since you could not find reference to the crypt_root variable I would post my configuration file, so you had reference.

root (hd0,0)
kernel (hd0,0)/kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.29-gentoo-r5-23-jun-2009 root=/dev/ram0 crypt_root=/dev/sda3
