You may be right then, I apologize. I thought the rc files only kept
the relative desktop file name.

If they keep the whole path, that means any reorganization of the
menus at all would break things; I would tend to count this as a
design bug with kicker... :-/ 

What gnome-panel does is copy the .desktop file to ~/.gnome
