That's not a crazy way to describe it, but it would never have
occurred to *me*.  Uncompressing the file doesn't restore any damage
done in compression, but you *can't* view the compressed file -- your
monitor won't display it, you *have to* uncompress the file into a
simple RGB bitmap before your hardware can display it to you.
