Tom,

The slmodemd supplied in the sl-modem-daemon package runs with support
of 32 bit libraries.
But the slusb.ko driver has to be compiled in a 64 bit mode to match
your 64 bit kernel.
This is not automatic.
I'll separate instruct you how to manage than.
