Marv,
Paul uses the free version of the Linuxant driver.
The highest protocole limited to 14.4 kbauds is V.32 bis.
It might be interesting to hear from Linuxant if their 14.4kbauds limit is implemented by limiting the protocoles known to the modem. Let's see what Jonathan can perhaps say on that. If my guess is right, though, values between V.34 and V.92 should then have no effect.

Too compensate for the noisy line, try a lower compression with:

Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +MS=34
if that serves better, next try:
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +MS=90

The default is +MS=92 , but it may cause problems are poor lines.

Paul,

I understand (right?) that the computer is a desktop, not a laptop, because
you reisntalled the modem card, not only the RJ11 cable, right?
Then please note that IRQ problems are often solved by moving the modem card
to an other slot.
Do not worry for the time-out message. It is due to "poor" telephone lines
or heavy load on the computer coupled to the modems at the ISP (the company
to which you connect) or even at the phone company - and I know nothing that
you can do about it except of course trying an other ISP.

Good to see you connected!

I still owe you an answer to a clarification question.
I am overloaded with other work these days, I have not forgotten your
request.

and next when i try wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.con it gives error ar

Then I tried to reinstall the alsa and hsf (same rpms) but without any
joy.Finally I
reinserted the modem card and i think it works now:-

below are some logs:-
[root@www ~]# wvdial /etc/wvdial.conf

So I think the problem was related to the loose connection may have
happened due to the
repeated attempt to jackin and jackout of cables (As previously i was
suspecting an
issue related to faulty cable rj11 at modem end)

Now I am getting a strange message sometimes in my syslog.
