I mean the 3 sites I pointed to earlier, bing-maps/yahoo-maps/google-maps
(apologies to the apple-maps folks they didnt' exist when last I posted
such links to an attendees list, they may ALSO be a fine answer these days)
have fairly straight-forward interfaces to find hotels near a location,
with booking links to the hotel itself, booking.com/etc.

If they arent' prepared to make accomodations themselves then how are they
getting booked into the IETF hotel? I contend that if you can book at
the conf hotel you can book at any other hotel via the very easy to find
links on mapping websites...
