And I think there's never been an IETF in recent memory where there weren't budget hotels nearby. If the local host can also arrange nearby student-hostel style rooms, that's a good idea, of course.

When I wrote the above, I had indeed forgotten a counter-example, where there was nothing cheap within many kilometres, as far as I could tell: IETF 77 in Anaheim, within walking distance of Disneyland. Same problem for cheap eats. A good example of where not to hold a meeting.
