Another observation (maybe it's a data point or maybe it just adds to
the confusion...)

Haven't got the TOSLINK adapter yet.  But I was sitting there a minute ago
listening to ahem The Allman Brothers (don't worry the headphones were on
and the missus could not hear)...

And I switched from Guayadeque 3.5- which has supposedly bit-perfect (hw:1,0)
to Quod Libet (which has supposedly bit-perfect alsasink device=hw:1,0)

When Quod Libet started playing, the bass kazoo was back!  I restarted the song
and all was well.

I find this interesting because it was the same bit stream / same resolution /
same bit rate (same song!!) but something got reset deep down below...
