Daniel, my device is this one:

http://schiit.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=0&products_id=7

The USB interface is inside the box, on a removable daughter board.
You will see
a pretty good description of the bits and pieces on that web site, and there is
a review which disassembles it here:

http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/schiit2/3.html

although this isn't supremely technical, it does give a great view of
the inside,
which may be helpful.

Anyway, you will see this is an "all in one" job, so the user picks
the connection
on the digital side (SPDIF, TOSLINK, USB) and then connects up the analogue
outputs to the stereo.

Other than that, the front end I've been testing is a Dell Inspiron 1501 running
Ubuntu 12.10 beta 1 plus updates, with your "kustom kernel" installed.

No problem, thank YOU for your hard work on this.

As I mentioned before, the Schiit manufacturers seem very approachable;
as a customer, I feel I could ask them for some advice and probably get
it. So if you have any questions, we could try that approach.

Meanwhile, I am waiting for a TOSLINK adaptor to arrive to see if that
works better.
