Daniel and list;

I have made some progress but in the end I'm still missing something.
Please see below...

You are right. Saving the attachment from gmail left me with CTRL-M's
embedded in the file. I got rid of them, and the patch applies
cleanly.

What stops me in the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile
article is the following:

I assume that I am more or less following approach A) "Use GIT" to get
the kernel source.

However the article speaks to getting the kernel source from kernel.ubuntu.com,
not from the source you identified git.kernel.org.

So once I get the source from git.kernel.orlg as per your
instructions, I'm back in
the article above, which says to issue the command:

fakeroot debian/rules clean

The problem is at this point is there is no debian directory to work
with, so fakeroot bombs out

clh@nice:~/src/sound$ fakeroot debian/rules clean
/usr/bin/fakeroot: line 178: debian/rules: No such file or directory

So, I guess I have to get the debian directory (and maybe others) from
somewhere else.

I run into the same problem in the next section "Modify the Source for
your Needs",
where I am told to:

debian/rules updateconfigs

and again I can't because there is no debian directory.

Similarly, all the instructions in "Build the kernel" require the
debian directory.

Maybe there's something I'm missing about "how to do this when you don't have
the debian directory. That is how I ended up in the other article.

Having said all of that, I am not sure which "make-dpkg line" you
refer to above.

I'm sorry I'm not catching on very well here.
