I've used so far at least barebox v2018.12.0, v2019.03.0 and v2019.09.0 on my i.MX6UL board and all were correctly detected by the fastboot installed on my system (1:7.0.+r33-1 in debian 9.11). If you want to debug it, you should start by looking into why the ttyACM doesn't work for you.
