Some good progress, from my last half dozen tests it appears I
cannot reproduce the problem if I go directly to SM 1.4.9a

In the past when I upgraded SM I put it off a sub directory
of my webmail site (/sm149a/ in this case) and put a link to
that version on the login page of the current "live" version.

When I go to my webmail site (webmail.linuxpowered.net) click
on the SM 1.4.9a link and login I can reproduce it, if I
go directly to the SM 1.4.9a url, I can't (so far).

A little while ago I installed "firebug" but that detected no
errors.

will test this theory more, hope this is a fix..
