Whilst I have adopted a wait and see attitude towards Fedora I have a few thoughts for you. I agree that there are alot of MS bashers out there and alot of linux users who wish to break the monopoly that MS has on the PC, particularly the desktop, market. RedHat has done more than any other company to make this goal a reality. The contributions of Alan Cox and others have bought linux from a rag-tag bunch of hackers, to an enterprise level OS, with enterprise level applications and support. This is a tribute to RedHat and its crew. But what of the little guy? The guy who decided to throw his lot in by developing applications for linux freely, in the hope that he will be able to freely have access to linux just as he has made his application freely available for redhat to bundle with its OS. Currently in the form of RedHat 9.0 we have a good solid distro, tested by time, with beta testing done freely by the community and bug reports flooding in to lists such as these, again freely, so that the developers can make the required changes. Fedora is in its infacy, and much of the work done by developers, both RedHat and community, will disappear into the enterprise level releases. This has the effect of shutting out, or pricing out, those in the community who have given freely of their time and experience. RedHat has a strong product which I have seen grow for nearly 10 years, but Fedora will need many years to catch up to the level of community support currently available for releases > 7.3 With the advent of enterprise level RedHat products, can we expect the community to still give freely of their time to fix and test RedHat products, or, does RedHat adopt the tried and tested MS model of testing its products on those who purchase it? These are not complaints, fears, or anything else, simply some thoughts for discussion.
