That isn't the case here. My /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession does point to .Xresources as you noticed but an .Xresources file is ignored. I'm not sure if /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession is involved when starting X from a console login with startx or in my case starxfce4. At any rate, the behavior I see is somewhat confusing: I started investigating a little more carefully, and here is what I find: I start two xterms from ~/.xfce4/xinitrc. These would be started before the xfwm4 I think. Anyway, once the desktop comes up, those two xterms have obeyed settings in my .Xdefaults. But ignore .Xresources. (I've tested with one at a time in place). The funky part happens after xfdesktop is up. Any xterms started then ignore .Xdefualts and revert to settings in: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults I wonder if anyone here really knows the mechanics of what is source etc when starting X from a console login?
