And why cannot RH9 error-trap that?

And why does RH8 have no trouble whatsoever with always picking up the
modem?  Did RH9 take a step backward in handling modems?  (RH9 does
handle the USB mouse better -- still fails to pick up the USB scanner.)

Will check the BIOS, though I suspect I had to turn off PNP to get RH8
to work -- RH8 required a ton of tweaks to get it working properly.)
