This is might not be related, but my laptop locks up the same way. The only 
solution is to use the powerbutton. This happens with the pulsar screensaver. 
If I click on the screensaver in the controlpanel (KDE) the preview starts up, 
but freezes everything after less than one second. I've got an ati radeon 
7500, 32mb.
