OK - Now I'm confused. If this is true, then why does:

make mrproper
make xconfig
"load configuration from file" configs/kernel-2.4.18-8.0.i686.config
"save and exit"
make dep
make bzImage...

...cause the reproducible segfault? It sounds like this should get to
essentially the same place, but it doesn't for some reason.

Strange.
