Marilyn,

Are you using Photoshop? One thing (I think) to be aware of is that if you 
resize a large image into a smaller one often there is loss of sharpness. This 
is usually adjusted either with "sharpen" (in filters in PS) or with "unsharp 
masking". I am sure there are others here who know more about this sharpening 
step who can help clarify the procedure.

The steps I take to prepare my photographs for the web are pretty much the same 
ones that Rich Mason described.
