For me, on a practical level, having a 75-300 on a 10D body gives me the ability to compete with my colleagues who have a 200 f2.8 with a 2x extender on a 1Ds body.
This is wrong. Someone with a 1Ds and a 75-300 can crop to exactly the same size as the 75-300 on the 10D. It's not a multiplier, and you are saying it is, it's a crop. Cropping the 1Ds image down to APS size will give you the exact same results as the smaller sensor. It's a real benefit for the 1Ds, because you can get either a higher quality image with less magnification or pretty much the same thing at the same magnification as the 10D.
