Hi Graeme,
There's a new version of the driver out for 2.6.27 kernels- I don't know
how well it would work on 2.6.25, but you might want to try it since it
does not require re-building ALSA... you can find the source here, and
either use DKMS to install, or extract the rpm and build from there:
http://linux.zsolttech.com/linmodem/agrsm/dkms-agrsm-2.1.80-4mdv2009.0.i586.rpm

When compiling ALSA from source, issuing 'make install' does overwrite
the old versions of the modules, so you do not need to remove them, but
if you want a backup, you can do this with tar '-jcvf modules.tar.bz2
/lib/modules/[kernel version]'
