Similar to your true problem, this laptop has a VIA hardware served by slmodemd and snd-via82xx-modem and its dependent drivers. When there is a modem failure, I just stop slmodemd unload and reload snd-via82xx-modem Typically this suffices to get me on lone again. What the division of code responsibility is between slmodemd the drivers and the kernel code is, I can't assess.
