Re: take a new modem

Dear Dr. Wawarta

We do not deal with Windows here. This is not the place for your problems with Windows.

We cannot know which "56k Intel modem" you have, without reading the file ModemData.txt created by "our scanmodem". There are very many different modems sold under such a label. This is the reason why scanModem exists. Have you seen on your display, while running scanModem, and even better, reading how to use scanModem before using it, that we ask to SEND US the file ModemData.txt?

Random fishing for a driver usually leads to failure, be it under Linux or Windows. If your internal modem is really completely an Intel modem, there is NO (=ZERO) chance that slmodemd and the Linuxant drivers, made for other hardware could work for you.

I wonder if you have taken the time to read
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/#scanModem
because it starts with:
"Use scanModem: You can quickly identify PCI modems chipsets"
As far as I know your "serial 33.6k Elsa modem" is an external modem hooked up to the computer with a cable terminated by a 9 pins trapezoidal connector on its computer end. You cannot expect a tool made for PCI (always internal) modems to work on an external modem, can you?

By the way, this ELSA modem should work with Linux without any special driver other than the serial driver always included in any Linux distribution. If the modem does not work, there may be many reasons, such as :

-you have not configured the connection at all, or badly.
-your modem is broken
-the modem is not powered
-the phone cable is not connected
-the serial port on your new computer is broken

 You write
> "Ubuntu
> was able to dial with this modem and
> to connect to the internet for some seconds,
> then connection broke down."
but Ubuntu does not dial. Uuntu offers tools to dial, such as the network management tool, or wvdial, or possibly gnome-dial or whatever.
But you do not tell which you used.
You probably did not use wvdial, otherwise you would have seen the cause of the failure. If you try wvdial, PLEASE first CAREFULLY read http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/wvdial.html

Dear MarvS,

in my new Computer (2008) I installed
Ubuntu 7.1 (several times) and tried to use the 56k Intel modem but slmodemd and Conexant
both failed.
Your program scanModem did not find
a serial 33.6K Elsa modem, but Ubuntu
was able to dial with this modem and
to connect to the internet for some seconds,
then connection broke down.

I installed Windows vista, which was not
evan able to dial with one of the modems.

I installed Windows XP Professional,
which also failed to use the modems.
I installed a modem driver, which
was used in 1994 for Windows 3.1 and
also useful in Windows 95. The setup broke down, but it installed enough,
to connect to the internet now with 33.6K speed.

My question: I would like to get a new 56k modem.
external or internal, USB or serial, I dont care.
With which modem I would have best chance to
use it with Ubuntu 7.10 ?
Thanks a lot
 Rainer
