I rebuilt it with the patch and it worked ok. I used ALSA 1.0.14 that
comes with OpenSuse 10.3. However, it does not dial. It just hangs in
there until it times out.

Given Marvin's comments, I don't know if there is much hope for this
modem now. Anyway, I am attaching dmesg.txt so you can analyze. I don't
know if it matters, but there seems to happen an error when the slamr
module is loaded:

hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method instead.

There are other relevant lines pertaining to the modem hardware but I
don't know what they mean:
