Re: Which PCI voice / fax modem to get.

Carlos,

If I understood correctly, John wants a PCI card, not an external box.

Now may I suggest that we continue this thread off the discussion list, if necessary? It has nothing to do with Linmodems and begins to smell business, which academic regulations forbid me to store at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il where messages from discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx are also archived.

John,

 I own one of these:

<http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16825104135>

It performs very well under linux (I have tested on Debian, Ubuntu,
SUSE and FC6) althought it might need some tweaking on the init
strings. I got mine from ebay for about half this price, you could
check it out.

Regards,

Carlos Marcano.

Jacques,

Fair enough. I understand that you (and the list) are only a source of
information and not in a position to provide buying advice/decisions. I
really appreciate all your hard work and the work of those who maintain the
Modem Database website.

I was hoping that someone else on the list might be in my position: need a
modem for Linux and willing to buy anything on the market. The Modem
Database is fantastic if you already have a modem and want to know if it is supported, but it is less suited to finding a list of supported modems that
are available from reputable vendors.

I'll keep searching and let you (and the list) know what I come up with.
That way if someone else is building a Linux system and wants to buy a new
modem they'll know of at least one viable option.

Thank you very much for all the time you put into Linmodem support!

John

John,
It seems that I did not make myself clear enough.
**WE ON THIS LIST** are not competent to direct you to a store and tell
you what to purchase.
Pointing to the best source of INFORMATION is **ALL** I can do.

I would search for surplus modems and collate with Rob Clark's table,
rather than the reverse, selecting a modem a priori and trying to find
it in a store also selected a priori.
