Re: Which PCI voice / fax modem to get.

John,

I fail to understand you.

In FAQ #22 at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/FAQ.html I have set a pointer to http://www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/PCImodems.html
Have you read that page through its end?

Sure enough, if you discover any other satisfactory modem, I will only
be glad to add it to my FAQ #22.

Jacques,

Fair enough. I understand that you (and the list) are only a source of
information and not in a position to provide buying advice/decisions. I
really appreciate all your hard work and the work of those who maintain the
Modem Database website.

I was hoping that someone else on the list might be in my position: need a
modem for Linux and willing to buy anything on the market. The Modem
Database is fantastic if you already have a modem and want to know if it is
supported, but it is less suited to finding a list of supported modems that
are available from reputable vendors.

I'll keep searching and let you (and the list) know what I come up with.
That way if someone else is building a Linux system and wants to buy a new
modem they'll know of at least one viable option.

Thank you very much for all the time you put into Linmodem support!

John

John,
It seems that I did not make myself clear enough.
**WE ON THIS LIST** are not competent to direct you to a store and tell you what to purchase.
Pointing to the best source of INFORMATION is **ALL** I can do.

I would search for surplus modems and collate with Rob Clark's table,
rather than the reverse, selecting a modem a priori and trying to find it in a store also selected a priori.

Jacques,

This is harder than I thought it would be.

I glanced at the Modem Database and I see that a handful of 3Com/US
Robotics
modems are well supported with "Full Hardware chipset". I think 3Com / US
Robotics is a good brand because I think they build quality hardware.

I check their web site (http://www.usr.com/products/analog/p-56k-menu.asp
)
and see that they currently make 3 different PCI modems. I check NewEgg to
get prices:

5610b Not available at NewEgg
5670 $8 (after $10 rebate)
5699 $25 (after $10 rebate)

I go back to the Modem Database looking for ether the 5670 or the 5699.

The 5699 will not work under Linux:
http://64.126.95.102:8080/gromitkc/analog/ad1807_1804.html

The 5670 is not even listed in the database.

This approach did not yield a modem solution.

I return to the Modem Database. I'm now looking for:

1. "Winmodem chipset with Linmodem drivers"
2. Marked "OK" in the modem database
3. Available for sale from New Egg or any other well-known online retailer
4. I prefer a reputable company, but I'm willing to forgo this
requirement.
Every modem that I find in the Modem Database, I can't find for sale at
NewEgg.
Does anyone know of a modem that will satisfy these four requirements?

Thanks,
John

Folks,

This becomes a FAQ so I just added it as FAQ #22 at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/FAQ.html .

Marvin,

I'd love it if you would identify a particular brand/model of modem that
works best under Linux. I'm so frustrated with the 4 different modems
I've
tried. I'll gladly spend for a modem that will definitely work.

Thank you for all your hard work! I really really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Cat,

For fax service, you should not rely on a winmodem, but get one of the
"hardware"/controller chipset modems, which are a bit more expensive
than the winmodems. But their serial like drivers are in every Linux
release.

Search the Internet for 3CXM556 and/or FM560LK chipsets to find modem
cards having them.

I've just tried to install two different PCI winmodems and had no luck

some recomendations for highly linux compatable PCI voice / fax modems
that are value for money and readily available at the moment? I want to
use it as an answer phone and fax. Thanks in advance.
