It would be interesting if someone with historical data could plot IETF hotel and meeting fee costs over the years since 1986, normalized to take account of inflation and trade-weighted currency variations. I really can't guess what the outcome would be.
Well, since you ask:-) I was complaining to the iaoc about this last year and just this evening sent them the attached updated whinge. Not all you asked for but some of it. IMO, it doesn't look that good in terms of iaoc performance over time. S.

Hi again, We had some exchanges on this last year and its broken out again on the IETF list so I thought I'd update those figures. Looks to me like this is getting worse not better. The original text below explains the method followed. I would be *really* pleased if you guys would state publicly that you've set yourselves a goal to address this. Stephen. I had the impression that it just keeps getting more expensive and from the attached, that appears to be true. I realise that there are a bunch of constraints, but my feeling is that this is not being specifically addressed and is getting worse. From the graphic attached we seem to have started to getmore expensive around 2007 and there's no sign of us getting cheaper. We now seem to be an inflation-adjusted 15% more expensive from the already-expensive 2003-2007 hotel rates. Any comments, or, much better, plans to address this? What I did: - Go to each of the meeting pages from IETF 56-79 - Take the lowest meeting-hotel cost quoted, without including taxes - Put those in a spreadsheet (attached as xls and O-O) - Convert currencies using the historic figures for the relevant month (URL is in the spreadsheet) - Calculate the 6-meeting running average cost to smooth geographic differences and incidentals - Divide by figures for the US consumer price index, (URL is in the spreadsheet) - Normalise so the first 6-meeting average is 1.00 - Plot that giving the graphic (jpg) attached. Thanks, Stephen.Attachment: hotel-costs.jpg
