Which is why I'm hesitant to change the versions listed in
download_prerequisites...
Not saying that I won't...I've already downloaded, unpacked and linked
gmp 6 and mpfr 3.1.2...but that the process of changing versions of
interdependencies for an in-tree build seems to be a daunting
process...

gmp 6 still fails...even with --disable-assembly.  At least it's a
different error...
