You should not blame the people arguing over whether more and more default streams are a good thing for your trouble, but the people who caused your trouble to begin with by modularizing the Java stack. Java needs to be demodularized. Completely. As a platform (i.e., a programming language and/or a set of libraries, Java is both), it is absolutely not suited for modules, because they are version conflicts waiting to happen. Platforms need to be treated the traditional way, shipping one system version, and if that is not enough, parallel-installable compatibility packages in addition. The lack of parallel installability makes modules only suitable for leaf packages.
