One of upstream Linux kernel developers even temporarily brought the laptop in question (in my case Asus X550ZE) for debugging. We discovered a new boot scheme method from BIOS/UEFI vendors used by Windows 8.1 and onward, we realized how far behind the Linux kernel was for years. To be fair, one of issues on Linux kernel development are manpower. Without the involvement from the reporters, developers would have hard time figured out the problem. The good news is the fix just landed on the main kernel branch, https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=2a5708409e4e05446eb1a89ecb48641d6fd5d5a9 which should be available in Rawhide in a few days. Hopefully affected laptops notably ASUS model will regain their hotkeys functions.
