They just do filtering with spamassassin.  Of course, most Debian lists
are fairly high traffic, so the signal to noise ratio is higher, even if
they might get similar amounts of spam as this list.

Well, a bunch of the junk on this list is some jerk using it as an
account email for Adobe and some other sites.  That wouldn't help in
this case.  But that gives me another acceptance criterion: auto-accept
messages with a really low score (say, -1.0 or something like that).

I really doubt it.  Spammers don't seem to care about NNTP at this
point.  (Although it shouldn't be too hard to check -- anyone who has an
archive of old posts could just need to look at the message headers.)
