For that matter, there's no reason one couldn't combine Discourse email or RSS subscriptions with filtering. I just remembered I actually do something similar with Fedora Planet and with Fedora Magazine comments — I use rss2email to inject into my email stream and that has become part of my usual "check Fedora messages" workflow.
