reverb in an 8x10 room is totally different from that in a concert hall.

Agreed. For small speakers in a small room, this probably works against
you, since you can localize those speakers too easily-- rather than the
sound stage localisation.

But the question is, for a given amount of money ($400 in the OP case) for
which do you get the bigger bang ( or the better soundstage) for the buck. 
I would argue that it is for the headphone route.
