Mesa, X.org and XFree86

I need Mesa's Glut, which didn't come with XFree86-4.5.0.

The Mesa docs point to the X.org cvs for downloading drm code.
I installed XFree86-4.5.0 as a binary, so, no surprise, the X.org
drm code did not compile for me.

I built Mesa without drm, and the demos seem to work (with appropriate
pointing of LD_LIBRARY_PATH to the as-yet-uninstalled Mesa libs),
but I'm apprehensive about installing over the X-4.5.0 libs/includes.
If the demos work, should I not worry? I'd be overwriting GL, GLU,
GLw, and OSMesa.

I assume I can build Mesa with drm if I install XFree86 from source,
and that the questions above about installing the Mesa code from
Sourceforge will be moot. Is that correct? Just asking for a sanity
check before embarking on a sizable download/build project.

TIA,

Jim
