They are implementations, with extensions, of a "idea" that has at its core a well-specified network transparent window system. This well-specified core is usually referred to as the X Window System Protocol. XFree86 is still being developed. XFree86 has been in existence as an independent volunteer organisation since 1992. There have been various incarnations of a vendor-sponsored X group (currently x.org) on and off for a while.
