I take it X.org <http://X.org> is not based on XFree86.

Code has flowed back and forth between XFree86 and X.Org many
times over the years. The last full merge of X.Org code into
XFree86 was from XFree86's X11R6.6 release, and the last full
import of XFree86 code into X.Org was from XFree86's 4.4RC2
release. Some of the driver updates have gone into both trees
since then, but no wholescale imports have happened either way
recently.
