Re: Help setting up RedHat9 on a Dell C600

Hmm.  Still no go.  It seems from the log file that the problem here is that the vrefresh and hsync are out of range (same result with the above settings) but that really doesn't make much sense.  I really don't think this is a configuration issue, you can see in the logfile above that a bunch of settings get probed and they all fail despite many of them being acceptable to the monitor, i've tried a bunch of different settings and even 1024*768 fails due to hsync and vrefresh.  Stranger yet when the machine first starts up and gives me the option to choose what to boot too it has a nice graphic there, definatly at least 16bit but it looks like truecolor to me.  Even running in text mode only the very center of the screen is printed to, I can even get a mouse to come up but it's restricted to the same area.  I'm totally stumped.  I've read alot about there being a problem with these laptops and XFree and that there is a patch from dell needed to get proper access to the video memory (or something similar), but everywhere also says that the problems were fixed by XF86 4.3 and that redhat9 works just fine.  Worse yet I'm still finding reports of versions of RH as old as 7.2 that install peachy on a C600..  Two completely conflicting versions of how this works, frankly I'm beginning to doubt the advantages to Linux over windows (although I really want to switch!!) if even the installation involves so much black magic.  I'm currently downloading fedora, but am somewhat sceptical about actually taking the time to go through with the install as once again I've found reports that things won't necessarily go smoothly.  And yet, knoppix boots of cd with no problems and recognizes all my hardware.. I don't get it, what is so different about them?

Other questions:  I still can't read anything of the cdrom,(ls -l always returns a "total 0") and thats the only drive that shows up in /mnt.  Is this normal?  Thanks for your help.
