I decided to do a restall last night as I don't seem to be able to read data of my cdrom drive either.  Things went pretty much the same, got to the login screen and it flickered and then.. slightly worse than before, same error screen, but some of the text can't be read.  Now, while researching this I found a page discussing how some older versions of XF86 really didn't work at all with the Latitude C400 (which shares a very similar chipset with the 600).  I was going to upgrade to the newest version, but the cdrom still doesn't work so nogo there.  Here is the contents of my most recent log and config file, nothing new.
