refer to `http://www.mail-archive.com/xfree86@xxxxxxxxxxx/msg11436.html'

you may want to have a try,

  HorizSync 31-85
  VertRefresh 60-75

  Modes "1400x1050"

or try install latest version 4.5.0 from xfree86.org.

the cdrom , how do you mount it?
via /etc/fstab ? or by command line?
what is the device name of the cdrom drive ?
is there anything strange in the system log ?
could you do a `dd if=/your/cdrom/device/file bs=32 count=1' ?
