Keyboard only works on one screen

I have a simple multi-head setup; no Xinerama, just two screens a PS/2 
keyboard and a USB trackball.
Everything works except the keyboard only works on the main screen. The 
mouse works everywhere (although I initially get the old X-pointer 
instead of an arrow cursor.)
Has anyone else had this problem? It feels like a config problem to me.

I am running Debian Linux 2.4.18 from kernel source, ( testing distrib, 
updated yesterday),  Sawfish + Gnome2. Video hardware is a builtin 
Nvidia GeForce4 dual-display. I use the nvidia driver supplied by the 
manufacturer.
