[Newbie]Xtremely frustrated Debian newbie

(Sorry in advance, this pissy post is the result of extreme frustration)

I am a new Debian user and have been trying without success to get a working
configuration for X. Every peice of documentation I read is incomplete and
conflicts with some other readme, manpage, faq or howto. I cannot figure out
how to calculate modelines, or if indeed I need to. I am a web developer and
not technically stupid, and I am close to totally giving up. If it's this
difficult for a geek to use Linux, it will never go far as an OS for regular
users :(

I currently have it running at 640x480/16color/don't know what refresh rate.
I would include the XF86Config but its very large and I would have to copy
it by hand twice because I don't yet know any way to transer files to
Windows. Anyways I'm pretty sure the file is configured wrong and its
working by a fluke. There are about 50 modelines in it, but within X, I
can't change modes at all. I also don't even know if that is the correct
file...

The manufacturer of the chipset on my video card provides drivers for SuSE,
RedHat, and Mandrake. Will one of these work with Debian? (not that I have
any way to download them) They are found at:
http://www.powervr.com/Downloads.asp

If anyone can just tell me the steps _ALL of them_ , and the contents of
_EVERY_ file that I have to modify to get a decent
resolution/colordepth/refresh, they will be my hero. Here is all the
relevent information. If anything else is needed I will find it.
