All times are in Kamchatkan Standard Time (KST) unless otherwise noted.

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO: 56°38'N, 161°19'E; Elevation 3,283 m (10,770 ft) dome elevation ~2,500 m (~8,200 ft)

Another explosive event occurred at Sheveluch Volcano on March 29 at approximately 1753 UTC. The Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center reported a cloud from this event to 40,000 ft above sea level extending northeast from the volcano and moving at 50 knots. Scientists with the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Services estimated the cloud to be 33,000 ft above sea level, and a similar height was determined by AVO based on satellite data. The eruption was brief, lasting only 6 minutes.

With two brief but ash-producing eruptions in the past 24 hours, Sheveluch may be entering a period of heightened explosive activity.

Please note: AVO is relaying information received from the Tokyo Volcanic Ash Advisory Center and the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Services. Because of the current funding crisis, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response team (KVERT) is not fully operational and the normal flow of information concerning Kamchatka’s volcanoes, including the assignment of color codes, has been interrupted. AVO is sharing this notice in accordance with the existing "KVERT PROJECT -- OPERATIONAL AGREEMENT FOR 2007-08".
