Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to participate in the after meeting fieldtrip that will take
place after the AGU Joint Assembly in Acapulco, México, 22-25 May, 2007,
details are as follows:

Volcanism of the Tancítaro-Parícutin-Jorullo region, Michoacán (Mexico):
visiting deposits related to collapse of a large stratovolcano and to
eruption processes at small monogenetic cones.

H Delgado Granados, S Ownby, E Johnson, L Pioli, K Cashman, P Wallace, B
Lange, Z Jurado-Chichay, and K Rubin

The purpose of this fieldtrip is to examine various aspects of volcanism in
the Michoacán sector of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. We will show
aspects related to the monogenetic and polygenetic volcanism of the
Michoacán-Guanajuato volcanic field. Visits to a maar, several cinder cones,
a hybrid cone (containing both phreatomagmatic and ³Paricutinian² style
tephra), and deposits related to two collapses from a stratovolcano will
portray the various types of volcanic processes that occur in this volcanic
field. The visits to Parícutin, Jorullo, Astillero, and Cerro San Juan will
illustrate the birth and death of short-lived small cones, as well as the
way in which deposits can be used to infer ascent and degassing processes.
Tancítaro volcano is a stratovolcano that has been poorly studied, and is a
good example of a large edifice within a monogenetic volcanic field. The
multiple collapses of Tancítaro are a consequence of its particular tectonic
setting. This fieldtrip will include general views of medium-sized shield
volcanoes that are also common in this region.

Dates: May 26-30.
Maximum number of participants: 20
