The soft version is the version in the kernel which inserts and removes tags. The hardware "accelerated" version is the version that uses the hardware features of the card. If the driver was correctly written, vconfig would have automagically worked and used the hardware accelerated version. Vconfig configures the kernel, and the kernel chooses which version.
