Pile Burning on Kaibab National Forest
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to burn slash piles Tuesday, November 30 on the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts. Pending favorable conditions and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval, approximately 130 acres of piles may be ignited seven miles southeast of Williams and about 60 acres of piles may be ignited three miles southwest of Tusayan.
The National Weather Service predicts east winds for Tuesday’s planned burns. Smoke is expected to disperse west, southwest of the project units and will likely settle in low-lying areas overnight.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. The goals of thinning and pile burning include improving forest health, reducing fire hazard, and protecting communities.
