Pile Burning Planned on Williams Ranger District
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers are requesting approval from Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to burn slash piles Monday, November 29 on the Williams Ranger District. Approximately 87 acres of piles are available for ignition eight miles southeast of Williams near Dogtown Lake.
Upon approval from ADEQ, the piles will be ignited if adequate moisture falls on the forest over the next few days. The moisture will help prevent fire from spreading into vegetation around the piles.
Managers expect smoke to travel northeast of the project and settle in low-lying areas overnight. Smoke may be visible from County Road 73, Dogtown Lake and Williams.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. The goals of thinning and pile burning are to reduce fire hazard and protect communities. For more information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
