Pile Burning Planned on Tusayan Ranger District
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Kaibab National Forest fire managers plan to burn slash piles early next week on the Tusayan Ranger District. The piles are in two locations, west and south of Grand Canyon Airport.
Approximately 60 acres of piles are available for burning west of Grand Canyon Airport if easterly winds exist and 48 acres of piles are ready to burn a few miles south of the Airport, adjacent to State Highway 64. Ignition of the piles requires Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approval.
Smoke may be visible in Tusayan, Grand Canyon National Park and along State Highway 64. Smoke will likely settle in the surrounding area overnight.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. The goals of thinning and pile burning are to reduce fire hazard and protect communities. For more information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
