Forest Service burning piles at Mountainaire today
Flagstaff, AZ – Excellent ventilation and enough moisture on the ground create the right conditions for pile burning today.
Mountainaire Project – approximately 300 acres of piles located just south of Mountainaire, east of I-17. These are large, machine-created piles produced during a thinning project. Smoke will be noticeable today, and will rise and disperse to the northeast. Residual smoke may settle in the immediate area overnight.
Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
Prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
